Police departments sometimes use what are known as sting operations to arrest multiple alleged perpetrators of similar crimes. Stings are common when it comes to sex trafficking, but they’re also used for drugs, fraud, and other human trafficking operations. The good news is that you have certain rights if you’re caught in a Mesa PD “sting.”
You’re Entitled to Legal Representation
You are allowed to refuse an interrogation by the police involved with the sting until you can have an attorney present. It’s always wise to seek a defense lawyer as soon as possible after your arrest, as the consequences of a conviction can be significant, and hiring a lawyer is the most effective way to reduce your chances of facing substantial prison time.
Understanding the legal process following a sting operation is essential to building a strong defense. Your lawyer can explain all the relevant laws and how they apply to your case. They can also look for evidence of police errors, chain of custody issues, and signs of entrapment.

Your Right to Remain Silent
As with any arrest, you have the right to remain silent if you’re caught up in a sting operation. It’s never wise to speak with police officers without your attorney present. Anything you say to the police, whether it’s part of a formal interrogation or not, can be used against you. Even if you’re 100% convinced of your innocence, it’s better to wait for your lawyer to engage with law enforcement officers in Mesa.
On the topic of remaining silent, it’s also relevant to note here that you should avoid making public statements, speaking to reporters, or posting about your experience on social media. Your attorney can handle all the communications regarding your case and can come up with an effective strategy for engaging with the media.
What to Do if You Believe You’re the Victim of Entrapment
There’s a fine line between legal police sting operations and entrapment as defined under A.R.S. 13-206. Officers cross this line when they coerce or induce people to commit crimes that they would not otherwise have committed. If you were coerced into committing a crime and then caught up in a sting operation as a result, let your lawyer know.

Effective Defense Strategies
If you’ve been caught in a sex trafficking sting, there are several effective defense strategies your lawyer can choose from. We can make the decision about how to most effectively defend you against the charges based on things like what criminal charges you’re facing, the circumstances surrounding your arrest, and your criminal history. Common examples of effective defense strategies include:
- Entrapment: We can argue that the police induced you to commit the crime.
- Insufficient evidence: We can challenge the prosecution’s evidence, showing that it is weak or inconclusive, making it difficult for them to use it to prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
- Mistaken identity: We can show that you were incorrectly implicated or identified, often by providing an alibi that proves you were elsewhere when the crime was committed.
- Lack of intent: We can demonstrate a lack of intent or knowledge of the crime, which may be sufficient to prove that you did not engage in criminal activities.
- Constitutional violations: We can highlight illegal search and seizures, violations of Miranda rights, and other constitutional violations, having evidence or statements obtained using these illegal means thrown out on your behalf.
Arizona has over 10,000 registered sex offenders as of 2024, quite a few of whom were arrested as part of sting operations. In 2025, six men were charged with child sex crimes due to a sting conducted by HSI Phoenix and the Mesa PD. All of the people arrested during these kinds of operations have legal rights that must be respected.

FAQs About Mesa PD Sting Operations
Can Cops Do Sting Operations in AZ?
Cops can do sting operations in AZ. However, there are certain operational conditions that must be met. The officers cannot conduct any act that could constitute entrapment, which involves inducing a person to commit a crime they wouldn’t otherwise have committed. If you were involved in a sting operation, contact a Mesa sex crime attorney regarding your rights.
Why Are Police Stings Not Entrapment?
Police stings are not entrapment because when conducted properly, they do not induce anyone to commit a crime. Rather, they provide the opportunity for it without actively coercing anyone. Unfortunately, there is a thin line between sting operations and entrapment, and police officers often step over that line. If you were coerced into committing a sex crime during a sting operation, you may be able to use entrapment as a defense.
How Can You Tell if You’re Being Targeted in a Police Sting?
There are typically many signs that you’re being targeted in a police sting. You should be suspicious if you start receiving unusual solicitations from new acquaintances or sudden, suspicious contact from old ones. These solicitations are typically persistent and urgent. They can involve online contacts pushing to meet up in real life, or an increase in supposedly coincidental meetings. People targeted in stings may also be under physical surveillance.
How Can You Tell if You’re Being Monitored by Police as Part of a Sting Operation?
You can tell if you’re being monitored by police as part of a sting operation by paying increased attention to your surroundings. You may notice the same unmarked vehicles or individual people coming around your block more frequently than could be expected by chance, or you could notice unusual phone behavior if the police have tapped your phone. You can also check for GPS trackers on vehicles and pay attention to whether the police may be questioning your acquaintances.
