State law outlines many examples of criminal charges that fall under the umbrella of homicide. Arizona Revised Statutes § 13-1101 says that homicide charges can include:
- First-degree murder
- Second-degree murder
- Manslaughter
- Negligent homicide

FIRST AND SECOND-DEGREE MURDER
The most severe allegation that a person may face related to the death of another is first-degree murder. According to AZ Rev. Stat. § 13-1105, first-degree murder involves situations where a person premeditates and knows their actions will cause the death of another. These cases are class 1 felonies that will bring either life imprisonment or the death penalty upon conviction.
State law also contains a definition for second-degree murder. Under AZ Rev. Stat. § 13-1104, this involves acting with the intent to cause death to another without premeditation. This is also a class 1 felony, although mitigating factors may result in a minimum prison sentence of ten years. However, aggravating factors may result in a sentence of up to 25 years.
MANSLAUGHTER AND NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE
Charges could also occur when a defendant did not intend to kill another. Manslaughter and negligent homicide are still felony charges where convictions can bring multiple-year prison sentences. Regardless of the specific charges, an accused person should consult a Tempe homicide lawyer as soon as possible.
